The Power of Creating: Finding Energy in the Grey Days

January 26th, 2025, and wow, this year is already flying by! I’m sitting here reflecting on how much has been happening—so many projects and goals in motion. Yet, even with all the excitement, there are days when life feels heavy.

Living in Canada, the grey skies can weigh on me. Add to that life’s unexpected twists—like my mom needing emergency care recently—and it’s easy to feel drained. It happens to all of us, doesn’t it? Those days when you’re just… off.

But here’s what I’ve learned: we all have tools to keep us going. The trick is creating an environment where we can thrive, even when the energy isn’t there.

Intentional Rest vs. Energy Slumps

Taking a day off is okay—it’s healthy, even! But it needs to be intentional. It shouldn’t happen because we’re burned out or stuck in a low-energy spiral.

The other day, I woke up feeling grey. I did my affirmations, worked on my vision exercises, and still, something wasn’t clicking. I just couldn’t shake the funk. That’s when I realized something: it had been far too long since I painted.

You see, I had intentionally stepped back from painting to focus on my kids and my online business. But as much as I made that decision consciously, I didn’t realize how much I was missing a part of myself. Painting is one of my core ways to express and recharge. Without it, I felt disconnected.

Creating When It Feels Hard

That day, I forced myself to pick up a paintbrush. At first, it felt like a chore. I wasn’t motivated; I didn’t feel creative. But I stuck with it. Slowly, as I let the colors flow, my energy began to shift.

By the time I finished, I felt alive again—energized and happy. It reminded me that sometimes, the hardest part of creating is just getting started. But once we do, it’s like we crank up that inner energy bunny, and suddenly, the aliveness we’d been missing starts to pour out.

Your Turn

Where in your life have you stopped creating? Whether it’s painting, writing, gardening, cooking, or something else entirely, take a moment to reconnect with it. Creating isn’t just about making something tangible—it’s about feeding your soul and finding your spark again.

So, here’s my reminder for both of us: Let’s create intentionally. Let’s take the time to breathe, recharge, and build a life where we feel alive and inspired, even on the grey days.

Closing Thoughts

Life happens, and we all have tough days. But creating—whether it’s a masterpiece or a simple moment of joy—is the best way I know to turn things around. What will you create today?
